This course covers the requirements of an asbestos surveyor

Description

IP402 Surveying and Sampling Strategies for Asbestos in Buildings is the first of the suite of international qualifications. Asbestos surveyors play a critical role in preventing asbestos exposure to asbestos. The qualification covers the basic tried and tested knowledge and skills required to locate and identify asbestos-containing materials in buildings and provide advice to minimise the risk of exposure. 

How is it delivered?

The IP402 course is delivered over 3 days of classroom time, however independent study is required (at least 18 hours). In addition there will be 3 hours of examination time.

Prerequisites

You are expected to have: 

  • Awareness of the contents of HSG264 Asbestos: the survey guide (January 2010)
  • A minimum of six months' prior experience of assisting on asbestos surveys
  • Previous training to cover the core competencies outlined within Table A9.1 of HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts' Guide (2nd edition, July 2021). This may be achieved by in-house learning or through the P400 foundation module

Overall aim

To provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical ability to undertake surveys of buildings in relation to asbestos. Also, to be able to provide guidance and recommendations for appropriate management actions to minimise exposure to any identified asbestos. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate appropriate knowledge and the correct practical methods to: 

  • Understand building construction and how asbestos was used
  • Identify and take samples of different asbestos containing materials
  • Understand the different survey types and their requirements
  • Carry out material assessments
  • Understand and utilise all safety controls during surveys and sampling
  • Provide accurate and comprehensive survey reports

You must pass three parts:

  • Practical assessment
  • Written examination 1
  • Written examination 2

  • Asbestos re-inspectors, or anyone that undertakes asbestos re-inspections
  • Those who require a detailed understanding of asbestos surveying principles (e.g. asbestos report writers, architects, building surveyors etc.)
